What you can do to determine if your Nintendo Switch needs professional help.
Inspect and clean the charging port
Look for dust, lint, or debris inside the USB-C charge port on the console
Use a soft, dry, non-metallic tool like a soft bristled brush or a can of compressed air to gently clean the port.
To rule out an issue with the AC wall outlet
Start out by using a known working AC wall outlet
Using an original Nintendo Switch AC Adapter plug it into the known working wall outlet then into the Nintendo Switch charge port
To Rule Out an Issue With the USB-C AC Adapter
Use an original Nintendo Switch AC Adapter as 3rd party chargers can cause charging issues
To Rule Out a Nintendo Switch Dock Being the Issue
If you primarily use the dock to charge your Nintendo Switch try bypassing the dock by plugging your original Nintendo Switch AC adapter directly into your console
To See if Your Nintendo Switch has an Issue with its Software
Try performing a forced shutdown by pressing the power button for 12-20 seconds until you see the screen turn off. Wait for 1 minute then press the power button once to turn back on.
Try and see if there's a software update and if so do the update
Check To See if Your Nintendo Switch is Charging
Its charging if its showing the charging symbol. Try it and then turn the USB-C adapter around and insert it into the console to see if its working. Its possible for it to work one way but not the other.
Have a Professional Repair it
If you have tried everything and still not getting your Nintendo Switch to charge unfortunately your console needs to be professionally looked at
HDMI ports are one of the most common repairs here at Electronics Monkey. When they stop working, it can be frustration - especially if you're not sure whether the port is actually broken or if something else is causing the issue. Before bringing your device into repair, here are a few steps you can take to confirm if the HDMI port is really the problem.
Step 1: Rule out the HDMI Cabl
Find an HDMI that you have tested on another piece of electronic such as a DVD player, cable box, or another console. Maker sure its been tested on a separate piece of electronic other than the console in question. If the HDMI is good then that is ruled out as an issue.
If you use the same input on your TV as you tested in step 1, then you know the input on your television is good. Step #2 is done and you know the input on your television is working.
Step 2: Check for dirt or debris in the HDMI port or bent or broken pins
Do an inspection on the HDMI port. Use something to better inspect the condition of the port, such as a magnifying glass or the camera on your phone.
Make sure there are no bent or broken pins inside of the HDMI port.
Check if there is any dirt or debris in the HDMI port. If there is use a soft bristled brush to loosen the dirt. Use 97% alcohol or higher to help clean it if needed. use canned air or low pressure air to blow out the alcohol from the HDMI port.
Step 3: Check your display
If you followed the step number number 1 then you know the display on your television is good.
Step 4: Check the console settings
Check that the settings on the console are good. Perhaps your console is trying to display in 4k when your TV only supports 1080p. or perhaps your PlayStation 3 is displaying on the A/V output instead of the HDMI. You might have to start your console in Safe Mode and then change the output. In the case of the consoles with an HDMI port and another video output such as an A/V output, hook it up to the A/V output and see if that fixes the issue. There are too many consoles to be able to describe every possible solution. Call is and we're more than happy to answer any questions you have for your specific device.
Step 5: Professional help needed if the steps above didn't work
